DRAWING MACHINE

The point of this brief was to create either; a way, a machine or an event that could create a new typeface. My idea to solve this was to create a drawing machine from spare parts.

To create this machine I used a scanner, some pieces of wood and metal. By sanding, sawing, drilling and gluing the wood, I created a way for a small piece of metal to travel forwards and backwards, left and right. By building 4 pillars that could then hold a metal sheet, the smaller piece of metal would then drag along as it moved. Despite having a way for the small metal piece to move, it needed power to move it. I added motors to the 2 pulleys that were then connected to a control box. Finally, to create an actual typeface, I sent an electrical current via a motorbike battery to the small and large metal pieces.

The font is created when, through the control box the small metal piece drags along the larger piece, creating sparks. To record this, the lights need to be turned off, with a camera on a long exposure taking the picture.
