Dyson Link 4.0

When Dyson decided it needed an App, one was created externally. This was originally a Start/Stop control for the Dyson 360 Eye and basic controls for the Dyson Purifier.

With new products being introduced yearly, Dyson decided to bring the App in house. A new team was created called Compass (eventually connectivity) Our intent was to recreate the whole app, as parity so it could be released early but with improvements if possible. I was apart of this team from the very beginning, from a team of 3 to eventually 11.

The first thing that was needed was to define the identity of the new app. It was whittled down to 12 ideas, with the final idea being one of mine - GA (lined drawing) it was actually such a success this was then used in other parts of the company.

After the identity was found, it was time to move on and create all the other screens. I created the GUI that was to be used (and still is used) for all screens and working closely with the UX designers, key stakeholders, feature designers and developers over the course of a year a bit, the below was the result.

The Robot homescreen/landing page was a great problem to solve. The original design was just a button that started or stopped the robot, with the redesign, there was the opportunity to give more information to the user as well as make things easier to access.

Sadly one of the later ideas was cut due to dev time but it was to have the robot actually move on the screen as it was cleaning. The idea being you could open the app and get a simple visual that its still cleaning.

The EC homescreen/landing page was an interesting challenge due to 3 factors. 1 being the house, it was something James had drawn early on when he decided there needed to be an app to control the EC products, he cared so much for a house and to see inside and outside that we weren’t allowed to remove it, even if a better idea was had. Another was how many data points there were and how many were coming in future ECs. Lastly, the product had to be shown.
